National Pet Month: Pet Safety Tips to Help Keep them Safe

May is National Pet Month, and we want to take this time to celebrate the joy that they bring to our lives. Like many pet owners, we love to bring our pets everywhere with us—especially on fun road trips. While planning any type of road trip, we need to plan ahead for our pets, too. Here are some pet safety tips you should check off your list when preparing.

Take Breaks
Many pets aren’t used to road trips, so it’s important to schedule breaks while you’re on the road. Every couple of hours make a stop and let your pet have a break and drink some water. All pets are different, so it’s important to observe and see how they react. The more you know, the easier it will be to prepare trips like these in the future.

Never Leave a Pet Unattended
This one is extremely important during hot weather in the summer. We occasionally hear stories where pets are left in a car because their owner didn’t realize how fast the temperature rises in their vehicles. Many pets have extra fur that traps heat, and having the windows rolled down doesn’t make much of a difference.

Make Sure Pets Have Tags or Are Chipped
Believe it or not, your pet could escape. They might go exploring, and since they are in a new area, they might get lost. Before you go on a trip, make sure your pet has a tag or is microchipped. This will make it so much easier to locate them or help someone return them to you.

Secure Your Pet
Just like we need to buckle up, our pets do too. It’s important to secure your pets and not let them roam around freely. Pets can be a huge distraction, and if they are up in the passenger seat or try to sit on your lap while you’re driving, accidents can happen. While it’s a good idea to have a vehicle with pet-friendly features, it’s also important to keep them in the back seat in a carrier, strapped in a harness that is made for car safety, or in a secure cargo area available in many vehicles.
